Exploring How Love, Wisdom, and Faith Governed Abraham’s Response to a Difficult Family Member
Family relationships can be complex—especially when faith, vision, and destiny are involved. The relationship between Abraham and Lot is a profound example of what it means to walk in love, wisdom, and covenant, even when others don’t. Abraham had every reason to cut Lot off permanently after Lot’s self-centered choice. But instead, Abraham remained a man of peace, faith, and intercession.
Through their story, God reveals how to handle strife, betrayal, rescue, and restoration—especially when it involves people we once walked closely with.
Let’s dive into the key lessons from Abraham’s dealings with Lot, anchored firmly in scripture.
The first major conflict between Abraham and Lot came from abundance. Their blessing became a breeding ground for strife.
📌“And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle... And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee... Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me...” — Genesis 13:7–9 (KJV)
Lesson:
Strife can destroy relationships faster than scarcity. Abraham understood that preserving peace was more important than fighting over land. True maturity prioritizes unity over possessions.
Lot chose the land that looked better. Abraham trusted God to lead him, regardless of appearances.
📌“And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere... Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan...” — Genesis 13:10–11 (KJV)
Lesson:
Lot was led by his eyes; Abraham was led by faith. A walk with God requires that we resist the urge to choose what looks easier and instead follow His promises.
Intro:
It wasn’t until Lot departed that God re-affirmed His covenant with Abraham.
📌“And the Lord said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes... For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it...” — Genesis 13:14–15 (KJV)
Lesson:
There are some revelations you will only receive after letting go. Some associations, even if they’re family, can limit your spiritual clarity and divine direction.
Intro:
When Lot got into trouble, Abraham didn’t turn away. He rose up and risked himself to save him.
📌“And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants... and pursued them... And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot...” — Genesis 14:14–16 (KJV)
Lesson:
Love doesn't keep score. Even when others make poor choices, we’re called to be redemptive—not resentful.
Lesson:
After rescuing Lot, Abraham refused the reward from the King of Sodom.
📌“That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet... lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich.” — Genesis 14:23 (KJV)
Lesson:
God’s people don’t need polluted partnerships or tainted blessings. Integrity means trusting God to provide, not benefiting from ungodly alliances.
Intro:
Lot escaped destruction, but his legacy ended in scandal and shame
📌“Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father.” — Genesis 19:36 (KJV)
📌“And delivered just Lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked...” — 2 Peter 2:7 (KJV)
Lesson:
Righteousness doesn’t cancel consequences. Lot was grieved by his environment, yet stayed. Proximity to sin eventually cost him everything except his life.
The story of Abraham and Lot is not just about land or loyalty—it’s about legacy. Abraham teaches us how to walk in faith when wronged, how to love those who’ve hurt us, and how to trust God through relational losses. Lot reminds us that not all who walk with the blessed are blessed themselves.
Abraham’s greatness wasn’t just in his faith—it was in his love.
He chose peace over pride. He rescued when others would have rejected. He prayed instead of punishing. And he never let bitterness rewrite his walk with God.
