Spoiling the Enemy: From Egypt to the Cross—A Divine Transfer of Wealth and Power

Table of Content

Introduction:

In the Old Testament, when God delivered Israel from the iron grip of Egypt, He didn’t just bring them out with freedom—He brought them out with favor. The Israelites didn’t leave Egypt empty-handed. They spoiled the Egyptians (Exodus 12:36), taking silver, gold, and garments. But this ancient story is more than a historical miracle—it is a prophetic shadow of a greater spiritual reality fulfilled in Christ Jesus.

In the New Testament, we read that Christ “spoiled principalities and powers” (Colossians 2:15), making a public spectacle of them. This word—spoiled—is not a coincidence. It is the divine echo of what happened in Egypt. Just as Israel left with the wealth of their oppressors, so also believers today are called to reclaim what hell has stolen: authority, purpose, provision, and inheritance.

Let’s unpack this prophetic parallel and discover how we, as believers in Christ, are empowered to plunder the strongholds of darkness.

1. Moses and the Exodus: God’s Transfer Through Favor

📌“And the Lord gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians... and they spoiled the Egyptians.” Exodus 12:36

When God sent Moses to liberate Israel, He ensured that the people did not leave as beggars. Instead, they were commanded to ask—not steal—from the Egyptians. God turned the hearts of their enemies to favor them. Why?

Because the victory of redemption includes restoration.

📌“Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants, and in the sight of the people.” Exodus 11:3

This wasn't just a people marching out; it was a testimony of God’s justice. Centuries of bondage were answered with a divine reimbursement. And central to it all was Moses—the deliverer—whose greatness gave weight to the people's requests.

Modern-Day Lesson:

God does not redeem us to leave us empty. Redemption includes recompense. Believers must not settle for spiritual freedom alone—we must also pursue the spoils: wisdom, favor, peace, opportunities, finances, and influence, all of which rightfully belong to God’s people.

2. Christ and the Cross: The Real Spoiling of Powers

📌“And having spoiled principalities and powers, He made a show of them openly, triumphing over them in it.” Colossians 2:15

Just as Moses led the people out of Egypt, Jesus leads us out of sin and death. And like Moses, Jesus didn’t just deliver us—He spoiled the enemy. The cross was not just a rescue mission; it was a raid. Jesus stripped the powers of hell of their authority and humiliated them publicly.

Everything the enemy had taken—peace, righteousness, healing, joy, destiny, and dominion—was retrieved. Just as the Israelites walked out of Egypt with bags full of gold, every believer in Christ walks out of darkness loaded with heavenly blessings.

📌“For the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.” 1 John 3:8

Christ did not just break chains. He emptied hell’s treasury.

Modern-Day Application:

Through prayer, faith, and spiritual warfare, believers are called to take back what was lost in the fall. This includes broken marriages, shattered dreams, stolen health, and lost generations. Jesus has already secured the victory—our responsibility is to enforce it.

Summary: How Faith and Prayer Unlock the Spoils of Christ’s Victory

The story of Israel’s deliverance from Egypt is more than a tale of escape—it is a shadow of the victorious inheritance made available to believers through Christ. Just as the Israelites spoiled the Egyptians by faith and obedience to God’s instruction, so believers today are called to spoil principalities and powers through the victory of the cross.

But these spoils—restored peace, healing, purpose, provision, and spiritual authority—do not manifest passively. They are accessed and enforced through bold faith and fervent prayer. Faith believes that what Christ finished is legally ours; prayer is the weapon that reclaims it

  •  Without faith, the spoils remain a promise.

  • Without prayer, the spoils remain untouched.

Just as Israel asked with confidence and received through favor, believers must rise up in faith-filled prayers, making demands in the spirit realm, not as beggars, but as rightful heirs of divine victory. Christ has already conquered; it is now up to the believer to collect.

This is the era of plundering—not passivity.

Stand in faith. Open your mouth in prayer. Walk in obedience.
And take back what the enemy has held far too long.
